Weingut Ziereisen, Gutedel, "Heugumber," Baden 2022

Heugumber means grasshopper and represents the starting point into Hanspeter Ziereisen's wines. Though, for an entry level wine, it spends 20 months(!) on the lees in large wooden casks after a native yeast fermentation. It is simply perfect everyday Chasselas, a wine that defines the concept of “drinky-ness,” except that you want less to drink it than to have an IV infusion of it. This modest (10.5% alc!) little wine offers more sheer joy than a thousand wines with greater affectations, let alone higher “scores.” 

You can smell it a foot from the bottle as soon as you screw the cap off. Don't be afraid to let it breathe, either. Then bask in its sour citrus fruit and umami laden finish, all for under $30.
