Lanzarote is the easternmost Canary Island, less than a hundred miles off the coast of Africa. Violent volcanic eruptions occurring in the 1700's covered the island's surface in a thick layer of lava and ash. Because of this, vines are planted in holes and trenches that can be multiple meters deep and across in order to access sustaining soil. These dugouts are also typically adorned with a wall to further protect the vines from the harsh trade winds. It is a wonder that viticulture can be conducted successfully here, and I haven't even mentioned the rainfall, or lack thereof.
Given this, we are always excited when the latest releases from Los Bermejos arrive as they are always singular and expressive. The base wine is 100% Listan Negro from a single vintage. The grapes are very gently pressed in a pneumatic press, resulting in a very pale salmon-hued wine. Aged 15 months sur lie, made using the traditional (or Champagne) method, and bottled with zero dosage.
