Founded in 2015, Lightwell Survey is the project of winemaker Ben Jordan and brothers Sebastian and Jay Zutant. Ben Jordan is the winemaker of Early Mountain, the well-respected winery in Madison, Virginia. He also owns Midland Winery with his brother Tim where he makes wine from his family’s Mount Airy Vineyard.

The Shenandoah Valley AVA is Virginia’s first AVA (1982). It is located between the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and Appalachian and Allegheny Mountains to the west. Its position between two mountain chains provides good growing conditions for grapes. The mountains cause a rain shadow effect, forcing rain to drop on the other side of the mountains. The resulting relatively dry, fairly cool climate combines with limestone soils to produce an environment that is beneficial for viticulture.

Made from 72% Riesling from Ox-Eye Vineyards and 28% Petit Manseng from Rosedale Vineyards, this snappy white wine has been on our Reserve list from day one. To make the wine, whole clusters of grapes are stomped and macerated for a short amount of time before being pressed. The juice is co-fermented in large neutral Hungarian and French barrels where it ages on the lees for 14 months. It is bottled without fining or added tartrates. It has marked acidity that is the hallmark of Riesling and the addition of Petit Manseng (another high acid grape best known for wines from the Pyrenées in France) does not temper its raciness at all, although extended lees aging adds a hint of creaminess for balance. Flavors of lemons, limes, peaches and stony minerality make this well balanced wine a thing of beauty—easy to pair with lots of different food.
