Lanny is our private label project named in honor of our owner's father in law who would have celebrated 78 years this holiday season. Lanny's first vinous expression was made by the winemaking team at Del Dotto and sourced from their revered Fort Ross Seaview, Sonoma Coast estate. The new Lanny bottlings are equally impressive and expertly crafted for us by Antica Terra's Maggie Harrison from organically farmed Willamette Valley and Santa Barbara vineyards.
This 2018 Santa Barbara Syrah is the result of a rigorous selection process that starts in California's central coast vineyards and ends in a tiny Willamette Valley winery. Fruit is obsessively farmed, then carefully trucked north in refrigerated trucks, and meticulously sorted by the Antica Terra/Lillian winemaking team. The wine's fruit profile is dark with savory berries and a lacy, smoky perfume. Lanny is lavish, but with a refined rocky quality that makes it easy to dive into. Drink now or tuck away for 3-5+ years.
In Maggie’s words:
“Certain gifts are given to the winemaker in California: the fruit will always ripen, it will never suffer from a lack of depth of character, of power. It is not my nature to lean away from these gifts or try to deny them by picking excessively early or by overcropping the vineyard. I choose instead to lean in, to meet the fruit where it is. The goal with syrah in this sun-drenched place is to work with the fruit in such a way to give the wines levity and lift, a certain transparency and fineness of detail. The syrah, as a result, is not particularly syrah-like. It doesn’t scream out the usual cocktail of blackberries, bacon fat, and lavender. It always feels a bit more about the people and the places than the variety."
About the label: Warner "Lanny" Moore is my late father-in-law whom I never had the privilege to meet. Stories of his career as a devoted educator and mentor to students at the University of Alabama paint a picture of a man who loved people, spending his 48years of life doing all he could to encourage growth, success, and confidence in his community. A pile of books and a pair of glasses were Lanny's favorite accessories and inspired the label created by our friend, local graphic designer Jim Beaudoin.
