Lanny is our Pinot Noir-focused project named in honor of our owner's father in law, who would have celebrated 76 years this holiday season. Lanny's first vinous expression was made by the winemaking team at Del Dotto and sourced from their revered Fort Ross Seaview, Sonoma Coast estate. The new Lanny bottlings are equally impressive and expertly crafted for us by Antica Terra's Maggie Harrison from organically farmed Willamette Valley and Santa Barbara vineyards.
Pinot noir likes a good struggle and so does our winemaker! That’s why she’s obsessed with the variety, why she makes wine in two states simultaneously (California and Oregon), and why she often throws out barrels of perfectly good fermented grape juice when it doesn’t meet her rigid standards. 2014 Lanny Willamette Valley is the result of an superb growing season and Maggie's rigorous sorting and selection process carried out in her tiny Dundee Hills winery. Her team, arguably among the Pacific northwest's best, tastes from more than 100 different lots, before blending them together and then taking them apart again to find the perfect composition, a tightrope of mouth-watering acidity, muscular structure and plush, ripe fruit. Lucky for us, this is Pinot Noir for all four seasons but it's what we're craving right now. Its effortless style, soft smoke, woodsy earth, and tangy red berry flavors invite cool weather comforts like peking duck and mushroom risottos.
About the label: Warner "Lanny" Moore is my late father-in-law whom I never had the privilege to meet. Stories of his career as a devoted educator and mentor to students at the University of Alabama paint a picture of a man who loved people, spending his 48years of life doing all he could to encourage growth, success, and confidence in his community. A pile of books and a pair of glasses were Lanny's favorite accessories and inspired the label created by our friend, local graphic designer Jim Beaudoin.
