This is a wine of happenstance. An exchange program that involved Arlington’s sister city, Aachen, Germany, led to introduction with the wine as a gift and a subsequent visit to the winery in the Pfalz. A decade later, the relationship remains strong and the quality high. The Pfalz, a 50-mile stretch north of Alsace, is considered the sunniest and driest part of the country. Konrad Weber produces this cuvee from his families top vineyard site, on a ridge bordered on the west by the forest of the Haardt Mountains. It is 100% Riesling, of course, and finished halbtrocken, which means half-dry, or slightly sweet. While there is a touch of residual sugar, the wine exhibits a subtle, lovely citrus quality, resulting in a seductive, versatile wine. Ripe, soft fruit eases the lime, throwing a touch of melon on in the mouth and on the bracing finish.
