Jurtschitsch Mon Blanc Kamptal 2018
Under the Jurtschitsch Winery label, Alwin and Stefanie produce Grüner Veltliners and a rosé from Zweigelt. They also have a line of wines they call “Discoveries from the Winery.” These wines are vinified and bottled in small quantities under the label Alwin and Stefanie Jurtschitsch. These wine push boundaries and play outside classic parameters, for example producing wines with skin contact or bottling with little to no sulfur.
It is a delicious blend of Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc), Gelber Muskateller (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains), Donauriesling and Johanniter (the latter two are relatively new hybrid grapes). The grapes are co-fermented on the skins for two weeks in large wood fermentation barrels. Afterwards, only free run juices are placed in large neutral wooden barrels to age until the following spring when they are bottled without fining or filtration. As a result of the co-fermentation and skin contact, the wine is rich with racy acidity. It has flavors of stone fruit—peaches and apricots, lemon confit and white flowers, and intriguing texture and tannins from the skin contact. At 12% abv, the relatively low alcohol content and the rich fruit flavors make this a perfect pairing with spicy Thai food.
