Joy Ting is a winemaker for winemakers. With a PhD in Applied Biology, she left a teaching gig in 2013 to work in the lab at Michael Shaps Wineworks in Charlottesville, VA. There, she honed her winemaking chops under Michael, Ben Jordan (Early Mountain/Lightwell Survey), and Jake Busching (Pollak/Grace/Keswick)--talk about an apprenticeship! Then, in 2018, she took over the Research Enologist position the Virginia Winemakers Research Exchange, a research and experimentation cooperative focused on tackling the issues facing wineries across the state. Oh, and she makes some fascinating wines in her spare time...
The 2020 Plutôt is 100% Petit Manseng from the Crown Orchard Vineyard in Batesville, Virginia. It is crafted in a dry style, with bright acidity and beautiful tropical fruit flavors. The wine is fermented in 500L neutral oak barrels and aged on the lees for nine months before bottling. Plutôt means "instead of." Joy had intended to make Chardonnay in 2020, but the fruit was destroyed by frost, so she made this fragrant Petit Manseng instead.
