Joy Ting is a winemaker for winemakers. With a PhD in Applied Biology, she left a teaching gig in 2013 to work in the lab at Michael Shaps Wineworks in Charlottesville, VA. There, she honed her winemaking chops under Michael, Ben Jordan (Early Mountain/Lightwell Survey), and Jake Busching (Pollak/Grace/Keswick)--talk about an apprenticeship! Then, in 2018, she took over the Research Enologist position the Virginia Winemakers Research Exchange, a research and experimentation cooperative focused on tackling the issues facing wineries across the state. Oh, and she makes some fascinating wines in her spare time...

Think Loire, rather than Bordeaux, with crunchy red fruits, fresh cranberry and cherry with hints of cracked pepper and unobtrusive tannins. This 100% Cabernet Franc comes from Mount Airy Farm, in Fort Defiance, Virginia. Uniquely, this wine is fermented with 75% whole grape bunches in a semi-carbonic fashion similar to cru Beaujolais and aged in neutral French oak barrels for 10 months before bottling. A fresh take on a Virginia classic!
