Bodegas Itsasmendi (Basque for “Sea and Mountain”) comprises 35 hectares of vineyards originally planted in 1989. It’s located in the Basque DO of Bizkaiko Txakolina overlooking the Bay of Biscay, not far from the city of Bilbao. Grapes are farmed by a small group of partners who own the extraordinarily beautiful land. Each parcel from these loam and clay vineyards are vinified separately in stainless steel tanks and one of Spain’s foremost oenologists, Ana Martín, is the winemaker behind these dynamic expressions of these traditional Basque grapes.
The 2017 Itsas No. 7 is composed of 80% Hondarrabi Zuri and 20% Riesling. It remained on its lees for one year prior to release. It offers a bright lemon-yellow visual with an intense bouquet of grapefruit, fresh herbs, and orange blossoms. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and rich, with zesty acidity giving it nice structure, perfect for grilled or smoked holiday seafood dishes.
