Rosenthal has been importing wines from Prudhon virtually since they began bottling their juice in 1983. The relationship has only grown stronger through the years and placed the estate into that “highly sought after Burgundy” camp. For those of you unfamiliar with St. Aubin, it’s located due west of Meursault. Although the white wines of the estate command the majority of the attention, the reds offer a stunning and wallet-friendly alternative to their Pinot neighbors to the north. The Prudhons own a solid hectare of Pinot Noir vines between 30 and 60 years of age in the “Les Frionnes” premier cru site and, as your probably assumed by this point, everything is done by hand, with indigenous yeast for fermentation. In keeping with the Prudhon house style, Les Frionnes emphasizes the raciness of Saint-Aubin—there is virtually no new oak used in its élévage, and there’s a certain restraint and brightness to the crushed red berry fruit that feels self-assured and terroir-loyal. This is a gorgeous wine that all Cali and Oregon Pinot lovers should try as their “education” into what a great red Burgundy can be.
