Glenowen Farm is located in Round Hill, Virginia at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains about 60 miles west of Washington, DC. The farm has been owned and operated by the Thomas family since 1784. Glenowen encompasses 800 acres in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The Thomas's sell cattle to commercial beef producers and market local, all natural Registered Angus Beef to a handful of locals, like Unwined and our customers.
Owen Thomas Jr. purchased the original Registered Angus herd at Glenowen in 1947. The American Angus Association has recognized the Thomas cattle as a historic herd. Today, they have a herd of over 300 Angus cattle, including over 200 mother cows. Glenowen has implemented a conservation plan over the past ten years that placed a conservation easement on 400 acres of land, installed a new water system to comply with the Chesapeake Bay Act, and recently launched a nutrient mitigation bank with 15,000 new hardwood and pine trees. Glenowen was recognized in 2012 by the National Cattlemen's Beef Association as a regional Environmental Stewardship Award winner and by the VA Department of Conservation and Recreation with the Clean Water Farm Award.
The Thomas family selectively harvest steers from their herd each year and finishes the beef to a USDA choice equivalent. The cuts dry age for up to 21 days before vacuum sealing to order. Glenowen contracts with Gentle Harvest custom processing which is a certified humane, USDA inspected facility.
