Menetou-Salon is the less heralded neighbor to the south of Sancerre and Pouilly Fume. This lack of household name offers consumers high-quality Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir grown on dinosaur bones (aka Kimmeridgian Soils) for a fraction of the cost. The Gilbert family transitioned their tavern into a domaine around 1768. Philippe Gilbert, a renowned dramaturg (look it up, it’ll be good for you…), heard of his father’s retirement and made the decision to keep the domaine in the family. His choice to return home and convert to biodynamic practices has reinvigorated the domaine and the region, as the domaine is one of the largest in Menetou-Salon at 27 hectares. The Pinot grapes are sourced from 4 ha Clos des Morogues inside the Medieval city of the same name. This 2019 ethereal, ultra-pale, direct-press rosé offers an exceptionally beautiful nose of clean red fruit and pure limestone essence. It is super-fine and chiseled on the palate, with a weightless density and a very long and pure finish.
