What sets Faugeres apart amid the Languedoc appellations are two things: its geology of schist and its high elevation. It's also small and rather stunningly compact, being one of more than 20 appellation in Languedoc but owning less than 1% of the total vineyard surface.
Ollier-Taillefer is located in the village of Fosses and their vineyards are the highest in the appellation at 350 meters. The domaine is run by siblings Luc and Francois Ollier. Their parents bottled their first wine the mid 1970's having come from four generations of growers in the region. In 2009 they made the decision to go organic with their farming and received certification three years later. They farm 36 hectares spread among 50 parcels, each hand-harvested.
The 2015 Grand Reserve is equal parts old vine Carignan, Grenache, and Syrah, all de-stemmed. It is uninfluenced by oak and a pure expression of Faugeres' classic aromatics with black olive, thyme, sage, dark red fruit, and stony minerality.
