Juliénas is one of most northerly of the crus in Beaujolais. Soils range from granite to schist with pockets of clay, sand, and alluvial deposits, while a wealth of different exposures and elevations yield a plethora of differing expressions of Gamay. Beauvernay is an interesting terroir of volcanic origin with more clay and rich in magnesium, giving complex well-structured wines. Michel Chignard is a modest man and tends towards perfectionism in the cellar. His 2019 Beauvernay tends toward black fruits—think black raspberry and black cherry—with floral notes and a prominent mineral streak. Enjoy now, or over the next few years.
