Cenatiempo Ischia Rosso DOC 2018
When you taste approximately 5000 wines per year you think you’ve seen and tasted everything, but then there appears a wine from somewhere on the earth of which you’ve never heard. Ischia is a 24 square mile (1/3 the size of D.C.) island 19 miles off the coast of Naples. The island lays claims to the first demarcated DOC of Campagnia, Ischia Bianco. Most of the wines here are blends although there are DOCs for the autochthonous Per’ e Palummo and Biancolella. Cenatiempo’s history reaches back to the 1600’s when the cellar was dug into the volcanic hillside. Ischia Rosso is a blend of Per’ e Palummo (Piedrosso) and Guarnaccia (Cannonau). The wine shows the intensity its volcanic soils, yet is light on its feet and bright. Perfect pairing are tomato based dishes, seafood (the wines have very little tannin), and lighter pink and white meats.
