Brown Estate Vineyards was the first Black-owned estate winery in California’s Napa Valley, and is best known as one of that region’s most well-regarded zinfandel producers. The Browns bottled their 24th vintage in 2020 and in addition to zinfandel, the estate produces cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, and petite sirah. This two-generation culmination is an investment made by parents Bassett and Marcela Brown, from Jamaica and Panama respectively. In 1980, they acquired 450 acres in the Chiles Valley AVA of northeast Napa after being informed by local family friends that the property was for sale. After cutting roads and bringing in electricity and plumbing, they began to focus on the farming, planting zinfandel vines and selling them to established winemakers like Mike Grgich of Grgich Hills Estate, for more than a decade. By 1995, the second generation of Brown Estate - siblings Deneen, David & Coral Brown - were fully involved in farming and winemaking and produced their first Napa Valley zinfandel in 1996.
