Brick House became the first certified organic vineyard in OR, and then the first biodynamically-certified vineyard in OR. Located in the state’s smallest AVA of Ribbon Ridge, its vineyards are comprised mainly of marine sedimentary soil. Doug Tunnell, Owner/Winemaker, takes a very scientific approach in making sure there is minimal disruption of the microbial process. During my visit, we learned how to identify Pinot Noir vs. Chardonnay leaves and how to chart Lag time, which determines the point of harvest.
The marine sedimentary soil of the Ribbon Ridge has much in common to that of the Beaujolais region. Doug believes that especially the commonality of the low pH makes Gamay a natural fit for his vineyards and has produced a beautiful expression that proves his point. This crowd pleaser is laced with soft notes of cranberry, raspberry, rose petal and anise. And don’t be afraid to put a slight chill on it!
