Los Viñateros Bravos tells the story of the Itata Valley’s grape-growing tradition that dates back to 1551. Organic viticulture and dry-farming here allows 150-year-old vines planted on volcanic and granitic soils to produce wines that are full of life, vibrancy, tension, and freshness. Inspired by his time working with international soil consultant Pedro Parra at Altos las Hormigas, winemaker/owner Leonardo Erazo takes a terroir focused approach using only native yeast and cement tanks for vinification and aging to craft this fun and historic style of “Pipeño” from skin-fermented Muscatel. His 2019 Blanco is aromatic with slight salinity reflecting the proximity of the Ocean, while the soils promote bright acid and smoky minerality on the palate.
Note: Pipeño is a straightforward Chilean wine often aged in redwood pipas, and historically sold informal from town to town by small vignerons. While pipeño is predominantly red, moscatel (muscat of Alexandria) is effectively the white-grape counterpart to the traditional país and carignan reds.
