At the end of the 1800’s, Giuseppe Benanti, grandfather of Dr. Giuseppe Benanti, began the production of wines on one of his father’s old farms on the slopes of Mount Etna, at Viagrande (Catania). In 1988, Giuseppe revived the family's passion for viticulture and today Benanti is in the top pantheon of great Sicilian producers. Their 2016 Etna Rosso is a blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese and 20% Nerello Cappuccio fermented separately. The Nerello Mascalese is aged in barrique for ten months and the Cappuccio only sees stainless steel, resulting in a harmonious medium bodied red, with tangy pinot noir like character offering aromas and flavors of crushed cherry, pomegranate, smoky minerality and dried herbs. Enjoy with cured meats and roasted Mediterranean vegetables.
